Lionel Bush, Year 10 Pastoral Lead at Bacon’s College, shares how tuition with NTP Tuition Partner CoachBright has improved their pupils’ academic outlook.

Context

We are a secondary school and sixth form in Rotherhithe, South London. As a school, over 50 per cent of our pupils are on Free School Meals which is significantly higher than the national average.

Lockdown was a very difficult time for most of our students who struggled with limited space, the challenge of accessing technology and the pressures of sometimes being confined with many family members for lengthy periods of time. Despite the quality of the remote learning offered by Bacon’s College, the education of many students still suffered. Some form of structure, activity and engagement was required and vital to the academic confidence and progress of the students.

Tutoring

We’ve previously used CoachBright to support the academic progress of the students at Bacon’s College with much success in the past, so we chose to work with them again once they were selected as a NTP Tuition Partner.

The National Tutoring Programme with CoachBright has provided an exceptional service to the students of Bacon’s College particularly during the challenge of school closures and remote learning.

The CoachBright team maintained email communication which enabled quick check-ins and the dissemination of important information to students. Tutoring sessions were delivered weekly to provide the students with the much needed opportunity to connect with a familiar and friendly face, and overcome difficulties that they may be facing in their chosen core subject.

The National Tutoring Programme with CoachBright has provided an exceptional service to the students of Bacon’s College particularly during the challenge of school closures and remote learning.

Unfortunately due to Covid-19, face-to-face tutoring was not possible, but the team substituted this with an online session for each student on the programme, which incorporated a variety of teaching and tutoring methods to support and reinforce learning from lessons and establish a greater understanding of subject content. This weekly 60 minute session was invaluable in helping the students to build confidence in their more challenging subject, improving their academic outlook.

Whilst it is still early for any data on impact, we as a school are extremely grateful for the continued efforts of the CoachBright team in providing effective and considerable academic support to our students particularly during the lockdown.

Advice

Our advice to another school would be: take the opportunity to engage, provide dedicated support to facilitate the programme, and enjoy and appreciate the positive impact on your students’ academic development and aspirations.

The lesson was fun and really filled in the gaps in my knowledge during the lockdown.

I have reassessed my position with graphs, and I have learnt more on the topic itself.

Every week when we have tutoring, I feel like I am getting better at Physics whenever it comes around. I also feel like I am doing well at the topic, because I am getting help I need
