Tracey Willis, Acting Deputy Head at Wigmore Primary, shares her school’s experience of accessing subsidised tutoring with NTP Tuition Partner Pearson.

Context

Wigmore Primary School is a large primary of more than 500 children in an urban setting. We have an above national percentage of pupil premium children and a high percentage of pupils with SEND with Education and Health Care plans (EHCP). Attendance is in line with the national average even through Covid-19

We have noticed that Covid-19 has affected students’ mental health. The children seemed more worried about their learning, and students lower down the school appeared more attached to their parents. Their learning had been disjointed by the lockdown, so help from the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) was particularly useful.

We selected those disadvantaged children who had seen their education most impacted by Covid and school closures and who were at risk of not meeting age related expectations.

Tutoring

The NTP helped ease the school’s difficulties in staffing 1:3 teaching sessions, by providing additional tutoring support. The subsidised costs were also very appealing.

We accessed the programme through Pearson, since we were already using Pearson’s Power Maths course and were confident in the quality of the service.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and parents let us know how much they appreciated the support given to their child. The children were genuinely excited for their next session.

The Pearson tutors were helpful to teachers and made learning for the children engaging. The dialogue between the tutors and the teachers was excellent!

We were super pleased with our English tutor; she was very positive and supportive to the pupils and ensured that tasks were engaging. The standard of teaching and materials were good.

Impact

We’ve had an excellent experience with the NTP through Pearson. Our students have really benefited from the additional support of fully qualified teachers.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and parents let us know how much they appreciated the support given to their child. The children were genuinely excited for their next session.

All children who accessed the sessions consistently have made progress, which has been really pleasing to see.

Wigmore Primary School in Luton is using Pearson to deliver subsidised tutoring through the National Tutoring Programme.
